The Beaches of Rarotonga Island

The main island of Rarotonga in Cook Islands is encircled by an offshore fringing reef that forms an inner lagoon, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Because of the coral reef, the beaches are composed of finely crushed white coral sand. Even though the island has accommodation all around its coastal perimeter, the beaches remain uncrowded and epitomise what one imagines of a tropical paradise.

This traveller's video looks up and down a typical Rarotonga beach and out to the turquoise lagoon, with the ocean waves hitting the outer reef. The lagoon is calm, shallow and great for snorkelling. Ask the locals where the best snorkel spots are! During some months of the year, it is even possible to spot migrating whales as they pass by on the outer side of the reef.
