Rarotonga is the main island of Cook Islands and found in the southern region. It is a centre for tourism and business, and its main capital is Avarua. The lifestyle is relaxed and there is an unhurried pace.
The centre of the island rises to rugged, picturesque peaks and travellers may hike across the island on a day trip. The island is not too large and may be driven round in less than an hour via a coastal road. A bus service operates in both directions.
The island is encircled by white sand beaches, with budget motels, plus larger resorts and luxury villas dotted along the coastline. On the eastern side is an area known as Muri Beach. It features a beautiful lagoon with some small motu (islets) and is a picturesque holiday spot in Cook Islands.
