The climate of Cook Islands
The Cook Islands lies between the latitudes of 9 and 21 degrees south of the equator. It enjoys a tropical climate, with hot moist summers and warm dry winters. There are only two main seasons - winter, from around May to October, and summer, from November to April. It is during the summer months when the winds blow from the north-west and bring the chance of more tropical showers and occasionally cyclones. Tropical flowers bloom most of the year, but in summer they come into their prime.
The winter months, though not as hot as summer, are very pleasant indeed and this is high season for tourism. The temperature is not as hot, and the humidity is lower. Cool trade winds blow from the south-east, which moderates the summer heat. Annual average minimum and maximum temperatures range between 19 and 29 degrees centigrade. In the peak 'winter' season, it is best to bring a wrap or light sweater or jacket as evening sea-breezes can be cool. Also, some restaurants are air-conditioned! The best fabrics are natural fibres such as cotton, rather than synthetics, especially in the summer months when it is hotter and stickier.
Also don't forget to pack sun hat and sun screen. When snorkelling, it is best to wear a T-shirt as it is easy to become absorbed by the wonderful underwater life and forget the sun hitting your back and legs.
